August 25, 2010 Dear Sheep & Goat Breeders On behalf of Agriculture & Agri-Food Canada (Animal Genetics Resources Program in Saskatoon),the Livestock Committee of Rare Breeds Canada ask you to consider allowing the drawing of purebred sheep & goat semen as a donation for genetic preservation. For more explanation I have included a letter (download) from Dr. Carl Lessard who will be in Ontario & Quebec mid September for this purpose. Please contact Carl or myself if you would be kind enough to participate. July 22, 2010 Decommissioning of Non-Radio Frequency Identification Animal Tags Frequently Asked Questions To meet the requirements set out for a national traceability system, the Canadian Sheep Federation (CSF) has investigated a number of tracking options that would best suit the unique size and structure of our industry, with RFID systems and electronic RFID ear tags emerging as the best option of those currently available. There is increasing demand by major Canadian processors for traceability. These processors have a significant investment in Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points (HACCP), and they have identified risk in the industry's lack of traceability. June 25, 2010 CSF votes to adopt mandatory RFID tags To: All Canadian Sheep Producers The traceability of Canadian sheep has been the topic of much discussion in our industry in recent years. Like all food producers, Canadian sheep farmers face an ever-evolving food production system that demands ever-increasing accountability at each step of the supply chain. CCWG Staff Appointment / Lethbridge, Alberta CCWG are pleased to announce that Ian de Koning will be joining the Lethbridge staff as of July 19, 2010 and will be involved in our Wool Services Division and our Retail Livestock Supplies business. Ian and his wife Katie have resided in Lethbridge for the past year. Ian graduated from Southern Alberta Institute of Technology with a Business Administration and Management Diploma (Honours). He has a very diverse knowledge of agriculture and was previously employed as a Logistics Co-ordinator with a large agricultural business from western Canada. Roy Leitch Livestock wool depot in Craven, SK is now closed. We have received notification today that Roy Leitch has sold his property at Craven and therefore we will no longer be able to use this location as a wool collection depot, effective immediately. We are presently searching for a replacement location in this general area and will advise all producers when a new wool collection depot has been located. August 2009 Shepherd's Journal sold to Sheep Canada magazine The Shepherd's Journal has been sold to Sheep Canada magazine. Publication of The Shepherd's Journal, which ended in December of 2008, will not be resumed, but individuals with outstanding subscriptions will receive one future issue of Sheep Canada for every issue of The Shepherd's Journal that they are owed.
The transfer of the mailing list from The Shepherd's Journal is underway, and subscribers will receive their first issue of Sheep Canada magazine (the Fall 2009 issue) in September. Subscribers to The Shepherd's Journal who already receive Sheep Canada magazine will have their subscriptions extended by the appropriate number of issues.
Sheep Canada is a quarterly magazine for Canadian sheep farmers, which was started in 1976 and has been published by Dr. Cathy Gallivan since the year 2000.
